Snowshoeing is a great way to exercise while enjoying the outdoors. With basic equipment, clothing, and a little instruction, you’ll be hiking through a Winter Wonderland: wondering why you spent so many hours on the treadmill!
Snowshoeing burns calories because your body is working to keep itself warm while you hike in the snow. You’ll notice “the burn”in your hamstrings and gluteus maximus (the muscles on the backs of your thighs and your rear, as well as your quadriceps (the muscles on the front of your thighs). When you use poles, you’ll also strengthen your upper body: pectoralis (chest), latissimus dorsi (back) and all your abdominal muscles (stomach).
The equipment needed for snowshoeing is easy to rent. Most sporting-goods stores rent snowshoes and trekking poles for around $20 per outing. Wear hiking boots or athletic shoes with your snowshoes. To put them on, you step in, tighten the straps, and you’re ready to go! Trekking poles are optional, but they give you extra balance when you’re hiking through deep snow. Avoid clothing and socks with cotton in them, since cotton soaks up water and holds it next to your skin. Brrr! Dress in layers, with a wind-proof/ water-resistant layer on top. Don’t forget your hat and gloves. It is also a good idea to carry a backpack to carry water and snacks like energy bars and trail mix, as well as your layers of clothing as your body temperature increases.
When you plan a snowshoe trip, enlist the help of a Professional Mountain Guide to take you safely through the scenery. Outdoor equipment stores and clubs like TRU Adventures offer guided outings. A guide who is trained in outdoor survival will keep you away from avalanche areas, keep you from getting lost, and add an educational element to your experience. As with any outdoor adventure, make sure that you share your plans with somebody who wasn’t lucky enough to go with you, including where you’re going, when you’ll be back, and the contact information for the organization that organized your outing.
Snowshoe outings offer a chance to do something fun that also happens to be exercise. The gear needed for an outing is inexpensive and portable, and with a little instruction, you’ll be on your way!
