Immediately after I won the Miss California title, I was told that my father was in the hospital. He had suffered a stroke and could have died. Doctors also discovered dangerously high blood pressure, kidney problems and a hole in his heart. All of these life-threatening conditions were the result of Type 2 Diabetes, which we never even knew he had. Since that time, I’ve learned that diabetes can often be preventedespecially if you start at a young age by eating right and getting good exercise. Every time we say “no, thanks!” to that super-sized order, or decide not to skip breakfast, or many other common and unhealthy habits, we’re choosing to have a better body, better healthand a longer, better life. So, how do you know if you’re at your healthy weight? And how do you know you’re getting the proper nutrition your body needs? Well, the only sure way to find out is from your family doctor. In the meantime, you can check out the Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator on this website to get an idea if you’re in the right weight range. But also ask yourself, “Am I tired in the morning in class? Am I sleepy in class in the afternoon?” If the answer is “yes,” you may not be getting the proper nutritioneven if you look healthy. Never, ever skip breakfast! Never, ever skip lunch! And I don’t mean a bag of chips and a soda…you really need to eat a good, balanced meal. Check out the school cafeteria lunch…. there you’re sure to get the right nutrition with the right amount of calories for your age. Lead the way at home by encouraging your whole family to eat healthier and be more physically active. I’m thrilled to be working with the “Stay fit. Eat right. Looking good, *Watch Miss
